In the 18th and 19th century the Grand Union Canal was constructed linking Leicester to Birmingham and London. With construction of the Midland Counties Railway, Leicester in the 1860’s had gained a railway link that was direct to London. This railway link is what was know to become the Midland Main Line.
With this new development in the transport infrastructure industrialisation followed with factories beginning to appear, especially alongside the River Soar and canal.
Industry
